Caves, pools, Volcanoes and ?Questions¿

We spent the last two days using our 4 wheel drive into the muddy and hilly roads of central guatemala.

We discovered some caves and some other nice pools before arriving in the Volcano area.

Yesterday, the sun came back on a sublime lake surrounded by 3 volcanoes.

During our last 3 weeks we ask ourself a lot of questions and we thought some of you would have some answers, so here they are :

1. Where does the name "Hamptons" come from ? does it mean anything because we it is everywhere in english countries...

2. What are Amish and Mormons excatly?

3. How do you say "starving" in Spanish ?

4. Why being cold is incomfortable, how cultural is it ?

5. What does ACME means ?

6. Is it possible for a cow to have or not to have horns ?

7. What is the Maltese Cross origin ?

8. Where does the dollar sign $ come from ?

I hope you can help us (unless you are to busy to answer your own question about Nasdaq or CAC40...)

J'ai commencé par chercher sur Google celui que je connaissais le moins : ACME;

how are you doing. . its your C2K Buddy from JFK. ..Wow i cant believe how far you have driven, i hope your fiance is doing some of the driving also. i have been checking on your progress and have checked out your amazing pictures.
It looks like you guys are having a great time. I will try to find out some of that information concerning how to say starving in spanish and the difference between mormons and amish ? Both are religious beliefs, the mormons are very popular in Utah - Salt lake city, they have some of the biggest mormon temples (churches) in the world. They have alot of money. Amish are a direct decendent from germany i believe and they keep to themselves, as you have seen they dont have any 20th century gadgets. they live off of the land, they drive horse and buggies, they wear traditional uniforms - men wear hats and women wear usually black dresses with aprons on the front. Both religions dont believe in sex, drugs or rock and roll. Starving in spanish - mucha ambre - which translates to very hungry !

$ : Plusieurs explications possibles

2. Amish don't shave and are dressed very old-fashioned (similar style to Orthodox Jews), they refuse the modern technologies that make them dependent on the rest of the world and live in self-sufficiency.

Mormons dress like you and me, use modern technologies, they don't drink alcohol nor cafeine (including Coke, Pepsi etc.).
They believe in a series of American prophets, including one to whom Christ appeared.
However contrary to what someone wrote they do believe in sex: they were polygams until they had to drop that practise to join the Union, and a good Mormon has at least 4 children and maries early.

Mormons mostly are in Utah, Amish in Pennsylvania and upstate NY.
Mormons have a candidate to the US presidency, Amish do not (yet).
I have a lot of Mormon colleagues (in SLC), not Amish.

A lot of differences as you see, and these are not the only ones.

4. Being cold is not uncomfortable when you are an Inuit (you have no choice) nor when you ski (you enjoy it)

5. Cows all have horns, but a calf hasn't when it's born (for obvious reasons). If you see a cow without horns, then it is either:
- an underage cow
- a cow whose horns were cut by the farmer so it does not fight with other cows
- a cow whose horns never grew because the farmer 'burned' them when it was a calf, so he does not have to cut them later (it can be messy to cut the horns on a cow, just imagine the scene with blood and meuglements etc; it can also be dangerous for both the cow and the farmer)
- a mutant or genetically modified cow
